Your moment to shine – Olympic Torch Relay volunteer opportunities

Related topics: Community / Leisure, culture and heritage

Shropshire Council is offering people a once in a lifetime chance to be part of the Olympic Torch Relay when it passes through the county on Thursday 24 May and Wednesday 30 May 2012.

The council is on the lookout for volunteer stewards to give a little bit of their time (around four hours) to help make the day safe and enjoyable for the Torchbearers and for those welcoming the Flame.

This follows last month’s (Monday 19 March 2012) announcement of the detailed route of the Torch and who will be carrying it.

Around 500 volunteers will be needed over the two days to provide information and directions to visitors, ensure the route and the surrounding areas are clean and tidy, and manage crowds and traffic.

Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for active and healthy lifestyles, said:

“We need lots of volunteer stewards to help us manage this fantastic event so your help will be greatly appreciated.

“As we’ve said before, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity which I’m sure many will want to be part of.”

People interested in volunteering must be 16 or over and will to need apply by 30 April 2012.  Full training will be provided.
