Shropshire building excellence awards announces winners

Last Thursday (19 April 2012) saw over 100 people attending the second local building excellence awards held jointly by the building control teams of Shropshire Council and Telford & Wrekin Council.

Compered by Phil Hammond of LABC, the awards were presented to builders and agents for building projects completed in Shropshire and Telford in the last twelve months.

In the morning delegates were treated to a programme of presentations by the awards sponsors, followed by the awards in the afternoon.  Awards were given out for various categories of building project, ranging from domestic to education and sustainable buildings.

Winner for this year’s awards are:  

Best Domestic Extension

Builder S K Deer and Agent: Ian Ellis Ltd, – for single storey extension, The Hazels, Ellerdine 

Best Domestic Refurbishment

Builder Glynne Williams Building Contractor and Agent: Whitmore & Humphreys, – for refurbishment, alterations and extension at Bridge Cottage, Lower Perthy 

Domestic Conversion

Builder Granville Construction and Agent:  Gerald Steer, – for conversion to form flat and refurbishment of shop at Shropshire Street, Market Drayton 

Best New Housing (small development)

Builder: Acorn Homes and Agent: RAM Architectural, – for erection of 8 dwellings at High Street, Newport 

Best New Housing (medium/large development)

Builder: Bullock Construction and Agent: Glen Howells Architects, – for erection of 16 apartments at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, Shrewsbury 

Best Community Building

Builder: Telford Building Contractors and Agent: ID Architects, – for extension to existing surgery at Station House Dental Practice, Oakengates 

Best Educational Building

Builder Thomas Vale Construction and Agent: Architype,  –  for erection of new Bishop Hooper School, Ashford Carbonell 

Best Partnership

David Owen Associates 

Best Small Builder in Shropshire

E and P Developments Ltd 

Best Small Builder in Telford & Wrekin

G G Handley Builders 

Best Innovative / Sustainable Building

Builder: Gareth Morris Construction and Agent: Shropshire Council – for eco lab project at The Community College, Bishop’s Castle

Overall Winner

Builder Thomas Vale Construction and Agent: Architype, for erection of new Bishop Hooper School, Ashford Carbonell 

Winners of the Shropshire Awards go forward to be judged against other projects in the West Midlands in June and if successful will represent Shropshire and the West Midlands in the national awards to be held later in the year.
