Torchbearer Rcahel Harvey celebrates the announcement with Councillor Steve Charmley

A senior duty manager from Shrewsbury’s Quarry Swimming and Fitness Centre has today (Monday 19 March 2012) been chosen to carry the Olympic Torch as it makes its journey from Greece to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Rachel Harvey has been chosen to carry the Torch in recognition of her charity work.

39-year-old Rachel from Shrewsbury has run in several events for cancer charities, in memory of her brother who died from cancer a few years ago, raising many thousands of pounds.

Not only this, Rachel was recovering from own traumatic illness when she first started training, but says running has helped her to get her life back.

To date Rachel has run the Great North Run, London Marathon and Race for Life.  In September Rachel will be returning to the Great North Run to raise money for Marie Curie.

Rachel said: “Being chosen as one of 8,000 people across the UK to carry the Olympic torch is an incredible feeling.  I’m extremely excited.”
