New trial to collect cardboard from the kerbside in Whittington

A new trial to collect cardboard for recycling from the kerbside will start in Whittington from the end of this month (Tuesday 31 January 2012).

This follows changes to national composting standards in November 2011 which have meant that composters will no longer accept cardboard in the garden waste bin.  Since these changes, Shropshire Council and its waste contractor Veolia have been exploring ways to collect cardboard for recycling from the kerbside in the future.

One option is to collect light cardboard with paper as part of the current recycling system. To see if this is a viable way to reintroduce the cardboard kerbside collection service, Whittingon was chosen as an ideal place to conduct a six-month trial.

Whittington residents have already been told about the trial and what they will need to do with their cardboard.

Councillor Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for waste and recycling, said:

“Whittington was chosen as a place to hold the trial as it has already been used to test out the kerbside collection of plastic bottles back in 2009.  The residents here are keen recyclers who are very engaged with the service, so this is ideal to test if collecting light card with paper could work across the county.

“Throughout the trial we will be looking at what vehicles we would need, how much the service would cost and how mixing light cardboard with paper will impact on the paper quality for recycling.

“When the trial is complete we will be taking our findings back to Cabinet to decide on a way forward, as well as getting feedback from the residents of Whittington.”

Steve Charmley, Shropshire Councillor for Whittington, said:

“Whittington has once again been chosen for a pilot on waste: it reflects well on the residents of the village that they are considered to be responsible recyclers.  The information gathered will enable Veolia to bring a sustainable solution for the cardboard collection issue.”
