Shrewsbury residents have an opportunity to make comments on proposals for changes to speed limits on several roads in the town.

The proposals released yesterday (Thursday 10 November 2011) are being put forward to help improve the safety of roads and road users.

Shropshire Council is consulting on the speed limit on a number of roads within the Shrewsbury area.  The revised speed limits being considered are:

  • Extending the 30mph speed limit on The Mount (from the existing 30 to Shelton), Sundorne Road (from Welti Roundabout to midway between Welti Roundabout and Sundorne Roundabout), on Hereford Road (from the existing 30mph to just before the traffic signals).
  • Introducing a 30mph speed limit on Welshpool Road (from Oxon Business Park Roundabout to Shepherds Lane), Somerby Drive, and Little Oxon Lane.
  • Extending the 40mph speed limit on London Road to Emstrey Roundabout.
  • Introducing a 40mph speed limit on Wenlock Road (from Weeping Cross Roundabout to the existing 30mph), and Gravel Hill Lane.
  • Extending the 50mph speed limit on the A49 at Upper Battlefield to the Battlefield Roundabout.
  • Introducing a 50mph speed limit on Thieves Lane, the A458 (from Weeping Cross Roundabout to Betton Strange junction), Weeping Cross Roundabout, and Pulley Lane.

Councillor Simon Jones, Cabinet member with responsibility for traffic management, said:

“The revised speed limits on these lengths of road will assist in reducing the likelihood of danger to all road users and pedestrians, and assist in preserving the amenities of the area. We want to involve the local community and welcome comments on these proposals.”
