A Christmas Carol guided walks in Shrewsbury

Fans of the film of “A Christmas Carol”, filmed on location in Shrewsbury 27 years ago, are being invited to join one of two special guided walks on Saturday 17 December 2011.

Organised by Shropshire Council’s tourist information service, the walks will take people through all of the areas in the town centre where filming took place – from the grand frontage of The Parade to the atmospheric shuts and passageways.

The walks will start at 11am and 2pm, and depart from the Shrewsbury Visitor Information Centre at Rowley’s House in Barker Street.  Each walk lasts for about 90 minutes.

Tickets are £4 for adults and £2.50 for children aged 16 and under.

Councillor Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for tourism and culture, said:

“A Christmas Carol really helped to put Shrewsbury on the map when it was made back in 1984 and continues to help promote the town 27 years later.  I hope many people will join one of these walks to find out more about the locations where filming took place as well as learning about the towns fascinating history.”

Local councillor for Quarry and Coton Hill, Councillor Andrew Bannerman, said:

“The film drew the town together and made ingenious use of many locations, some of which were barely known by most Salopians.  Seeing them ‘in the flesh’ will affirm how amazingly rich in history and beauty our town centre is.”

These tours were very popular last year, so advance booking is essential.

For tickets visit the Shrewsbury Visitor Information Centre, Rowley’s House or telephone 01743 281200 to book over the phone.  The centre is open Mondays to Saturdays 10am to 5pm.
