Closure of Clun Bridge from Tuesday 18 October

Clun Bridge, which carries the A488 road over the River Clun in Clun, will be closed to traffic on Tuesday 18 October 2011 for up to a week to enable repairs to be carried out.

The repair work will involve taking down and rebuilding the downstream parapet which has been recently damaged by a vehicle impact.  Kerbing and bollards will also be installed to try to reduce vehicle collisions with the bridge parapets.

Unfortunately, due to the narrow nature of the bridge, it is not possible to carry out the proposed work safely without closing the bridge to traffic.

When the road is closed, traffic will be diverted via Lydbury North, Little Brampton, Purslow, Twitchen, Marlow, Leintwardine and Knighton.  In addition a local diversion will be signed via Bicton and Whitcott Evan.

Steve Price, environment group manager, said:

“It is appreciated that the road closure will cause inconvenience, in particular due to the distances involved for the diverted traffic.  However these repairs are necessary for safety reasons and every reasonable effort will be made to reopen the bridge to traffic as soon as possible.”

Nigel Hartin, Shropshire councillor for Clun, said:

“Hopefully the additional kerbing and bollards, which the closure gives us the opportunity to install, will help to stop some of the ongoing damage caused by vehicles approaching from the north.”
