Car parking during Shrewsbury Flower Show

Related topics: Community / Leisure, culture and heritage

Shropshire Council is reminding people about parking arrangements in Shrewsbury town centre on the days of the Shrewsbury Flower Show (Friday 12 August and Saturday 13 August 2011).

Parking your car if you are visiting the show

On the days of the show Frankwell Main car park, Frankwell Riverside car park, Radbrook Road and Burrs Field will be designated as Flower Show car parks, for use by people visiting the show.

Motorists will be advised to use one of these designated Flower Show car parks.  On reaching the outskirts of Shrewsbury they should follow the ‘AA – Flower Show’ direction signs, which will be actively managed throughout the day, to reach the most suitable car park.

The Radbrook Road and the Shropshire Show Ground (The old West Mid Show Ground) car parks will have a frequent free shuttle bus service direct to and from the Flower Show Showground (Quarry). Low floored buses will be available for visitors in wheelchairs or with pushchairs. Burrs Field car park is within walking distance of the Flower Show.

Each of the Flower Show car parks will be open from 9am on Friday 12 August and Saturday 13 August, and the cost will be £4.50 per car.  There will be sufficient car parking for all cars visiting the show.

St. Julian’s Friars car park will not be open on either 12 August or 13 August.

Coach parking

Frankwell Main car park is the only coach park available this year, with capacity for up to 200 coaches.  The price to park will be £11 per coach.  Eight spaces in the Abbey Foregate car park will remain free for coaches and HGV vehicles.

 Mobility buses shuttle service

A fleet of mobility buses will be operating a shuttle service from Frankwell Main car park/coach park for people in wheelchairs, and those who may have difficulty walking, plus their carers.

An extended evening service for Park and Ride

The Park and Ride bus service will be extended for people visiting the show later on or those wishing to see the fireworks display.

Buses will run every 15 minutes from 6.45pm, stopping for the fireworks display at 9.15pm and then resuming afterwards until 10.15pm.

The bus stops/drop off points are at Shoplatch and Barker Street.  However, people will be picked up only at Barker Street after the firework display has finished.

A return trip costs just £1.60 and the sites are well signed on all approaches to the town centre.

Park and Ride and parking your car if you are not visiting the show

People who wish to visit the town centre to shop or work are asked to use the Park and Ride service, which will be dedicated to the non-Flower Show car park users who wish to avoid Flower Show traffic.

This service will run every 10 minutes from 7.30am on the Friday and from 8am on the Saturday, with the last bus leaving the town centre at 6.45pm.

A return trip costs just £1.60 and the sites are well signed on all approaches to the town centre.

The Abbey Foregate car park, Raven Meadows multi-storey car park, the Strand car park and the short-stay town centre car parks will all be open as normal on the days of the Flower Show.

Parking will also be available at Frankwell sports field before 9am, at a cost of just £2 all day.

Road closures and ‘no parking’ areas

St Chads Terrace (by St Chads) on the Town Walls route will be closed for both days. Through traffic will be able to use the High Street or St Johns Hill.

There will also be closures at Castle Gates, Castle Street, High Street, Shoplatch, and St Johns Hill for 15 minutes for the military parade through the town at around 11.10am on both days.

There will be ‘No Parking’ Orders in place at various locations including Victoria Avenue, Priory Road (emergency route), Claremont Street, Radbrook Road and Pengwern Road (for buses to park).
