People invited to shape new youth facility in Gobowen

Young people from Gobowen are being asked to get involved with plans to open Gobowen Pavilion as a base for youth facilities.  Initially the group are looking to open on an informal basis over the summer to help gauge what the local young people want from a meeting place.

A project committee has formed under the name of The Green Room Youth Project and will work in partnership with Silo Central, Gobowen Pavilion and Playing Field Committee, Shropshire Council, Selattyn and Gobowen Parish Council and the West Mercia local policing team.

Shropshire Youth Association will support the group and provide training and guidance for volunteers.  Together with partners, the group intends to talk to young people to find out what they think about the project.

Selattyn and Gobowen Parish Councillor Erica Morgan, who is a member of the newly formed committee, said:

“Following the closure of the Silo Central in 2009, the group tried to run some sessions in the Pavilion but this failed due to lack of funding and availability of volunteers.  We hope that this time we have the balance right and that we can support a new group.

“Initially we plan to meet as a drop in on 5 July 2011 and 19 July 2011 between 6.30pm and 8.30pm, and also host some summer holiday activities on the playing fields.  Providing young people indicate that they want a meeting place and will support it, we will do what we can from our side to make this happen for them.”

Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for education and skills, Councillor Aggie Caesar-Homden, said:

“This is a great example of the community working together to provide a youth facility that the young people have decided they would like.  I am delighted we will have a new project committee of volunteers and partners to enable the community to run this provision.  I hope that sufficient people come forward and support our young people.”
