Pavement improvements in Oswestry

Work to improve pavements on two streets in Oswestry will start next month (Monday 6 June 2011), following feedback from local residents about their condition.

The pavements on Bailey Street and Leg Street have over a period of time been damaged by tree roots, causing their surfaces to be uneven.  Because of this, two large London Plane trees will need to be removed on Sunday 5 June 2011 in preparation for resurfacing work to start on the affected pavements the following day.

The resurfacing work is expected to take around 10 days to complete.  Both of these trees will be replaced with a more suitable species later on this year so that it coincides with the appropriate planting period between November and March.

The four remaining trees on Bailey Street will be pruned using an ancient method called pollarding this winter, which will help to prolong their lifespan.

Councillor Martin Bennett, Shropshire Council’s deputy Cabinet member, said:

“I realise that work involving trees does cause concern for some people, but I am sure that this will improve the look of the streets and make them more accessible.”
