Five bags of rubbish and 1,010kg of road sweepings were recently collected in Much Wenlock by eager volunteers and Shropshire Council officers as part of the national Big Tidy Up campaign.

Both joined forces to take part in the litter pick on Wednesday 18 May 2011, which was carried out alongside the council’s routine street cleaning schedule.

The litter pick was focused on St Mary’s Road, St Mary’s Lane, HIgh Street, Barrow Street, Wilmore Street, St Owens Road, King Street, Queen Street, Sheinton Street, Back Lane and Bull Ring.

Councillor Martin Bennett, Shropshire Council’s deputy Cabinet member, said:

“The day was a great success – lots of litter was collected, weeds were removed and drains were cleared.  I’d like to especially thank the fantastic volunteers who took time out of their busy schedule to help keep the town clean and tidy.”

Milner Whiteman, Shropshire Councillor for Much Wenlock, said:

“I would like to thank the volunteers who turned out to help clear up this large amount of litter.  They, together with the Shropshire Council staff, have made the town look better, as we look forward to welcoming more visitors to Much Wenlock this year.”
