Shropshire residents of all ages are being encouraged to make a fresh start this Stoptober by signing up for free support from Shropshire Council’s Healthy Lives Stop Smoking Service.

In the past twelve months, the service has supported over 690 residents on their journey to becoming non-smokers. Stopping smoking is one of the best things people of all ages can do for their health. It can reduce the risk of serious illnesses including heart disease, stroke, lung disease and many cancers, while also improving wellbeing and saving money.
To help residents quit for good, Shropshire Council’s Healthy Lives Stop Smoking Service provides free, confidential support from specialist stop smoking advisors. The service is available to tobacco smokers of all ages, including young people aged 12 and over, who live or work in Shropshire, or who are registered with a Shropshire GP.
People who sign up receive personalised behavioural support and advice, along with access to a starter supply of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) following an assessment. Advisors can help clients set a quit date, manage cravings and withdrawal symptoms, and stay motivated throughout their quit journey.
Councillor Ruth Houghton, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care, said:
“Stoptober is a great opportunity for anyone who smokes to take that first step towards a healthier future.
“Quitting smoking is not always easy, but people are far more likely to succeed when they have the right support behind them. Our Healthy Lives Stop Smoking Service offers free, personalised help from experienced advisors who can guide people through every stage of their quit journey.
“If you’ve tried to quit before or are thinking about it for the first time, I would encourage you to make this your Stoptober and take advantage of the support available.”
The Healthy Lives Stop Smoking Service forms part of Shropshire’s wider Smokefree ambition to reduce the harms caused by smoking for residents and their families.
