Shrewsbury Road, Longden to close for 20mph scheme work

Shrewsbury Road in Longden will be closed from Wednesday 29 to Friday 31 October [2025] – from 9.30am to 3pm each day – for work to introduce a 20mph speed limit outside Longden Primary School.
The work will see the introduction of variable message signs, other signage, and new road markings.
A road closure is required so that ducting/cabling for the electrical connections to the signs can be installed under the road surface – and the road is too narrow for work to be carried out under temporary traffic lights.
At a later date (to be confirmed) temporary lights will be set up while work is carried out to install the remaining sign posts and signs, and to undertake the electrical connections.
The new speed limit is being implemented as part of a Shropshire Council’s programme that will see 20mph speed restrictions introduced outside some 20 Shropshire schools between September 2025 and March 2026.
During the closures a signed diversion will be place – and access/egress for properties and businesses within the closure will be maintained when safe to do so. Depending on their vehicle type, road users may be able to choose an alternative diversion route.
For more information visit and search the One Network roadworks website.
People are asked not to park on the road during the day whilst the work is in progress.
During the work, access to the works area will be restricted to:
- Essential highway personnel
- Local residents who live and reside within the road closure
- Businesses located within the closure (if applicable)
- Pedestrians, dismounted cyclists and equestrians
- Emergency vehicles
- Utility or public service vehicles when safe to do so
All planned roadworks are subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. Any changes will be displayed on the yellow advanced warning signs and on https://one.network/
Work will be carried out by Kier on behalf of Shropshire Council.
