Flooding: UPDATE Wednesday 3 January 11.45am

Heavy rainfall across the region has caused issues with rising river levels, and surface water is causing flash flooding across the county, making travel difficult.

This morning there is a power cut, meaning the bus station in Shrewsbury closure continues.

We are liaising with the bus operators, but passengers are advised that the temporary terminals are:

  • New Park Road near Beacalls Lane
  • Abbey Foregate HGV, Coach and Car Park / Abbey Foregate / Old Potts Way
  • Frankwell by Theatre Severn

Earlier today Raven Meadows Multi-Storey Car Park was temporarily closed, but is now reopen. Access is via Meadow Place, with the one-way system operating as two way traffic.

The A41 Bletchley, near Market Drayton, dual carriageway has also reopened this morning.

Flood barriers are in place in Frankwell, Shrewsbury, and will remain until further notice; and flood defences at Coleham Head are also in place.

River levels are rising and current levels remain high, so we will see some further impact on the highway network over the next couple of days. The level reached 3.58m at the Welsh Bridge gauge at 4.15pm yesterday and was rising, and we will see this continue over at least the next few hours, and are monitoring for the ongoing rise or next peak in the next 24 hours.

The peak we have been provided by our partners is currently 4.9m at the Welsh Bridge gauge.

Bridgnorth is expected to reach a peak at between 4.5m and 4.8m this afternoon.

In Ludlow the level at 4.15pm yesterday was 3.00m at the River Teme gauge and was rising, with an expected peak of 3.5m to 3.7m achieved overnight.

From 8am today onwards there were 12 Flood Warnings and eight Flood Alerts in Shropshire, instructing those living near these areas to take action or be prepared for flooding.

Flood Warnings are: River Severn at Pentre, River Severn at Quatford, River Severn at Shrawardine, Montford Bridge and Mytton, River Severn at the Showground and The Quarry, Shrewsbury, River Teme at Eardiston, River Teme at Leintwardine and Walford, River Vyrnwy at Maesbrook, River Vyrnwy at Melverley, River Corve at Ludlow and River Severn at Shrewsbury.

Flood Alerts are: Ledwyche Brook and River Rea, Lower Teme, Rea Brook and Cound Brook, River Severn in Shropshire, River Worfe, Severn Vyrnwy confluence, Tern and Perry catchments and Upper Teme .

People are reminded not to enter floodwaters. Do not drive into floodwaters. Not only is it a risk to life for drivers but abandoning vehicles in floods risk blocking emergency access routes.

Bus station

Shrewsbury bus station is closed. Temporary bus terminals are set up at:

  • New Park Road below Beacalls Lane (Harlescott Park and Ride drop off and pick up)
  • Abbey Foregate car park – coach bays and half of the lower section of the car park (Meole Brace Park and Ride drop off and pick up, and for some services Abbey Foregate by the Abbey)
  • Theatre Severn and Oxon Park and Ride on Frankwell Island, (Oxon Park and Ride drop off and pick up on Frankwell Island)

Car park closures

If you are thinking of travelling into the town centre please walk or cycle. If you are driving, please use the Park & Ride services instead. For those needing to park in the town centre we recommend Abbey Foregate Car Park, or Shirehall Overflow Car Park off London Road.

  • Frankwell Riverside Car Park – closed due to occupation by our partner the Environment Agency.
  • Frankwell Main Car Park – closed until further notice. Frankwell resident, season and weekly ticket holders can use Raven Meadows MSCP. Please check the opening hours at Raven Meadows or check at the car park office on the left-hand side of the entry lane. If the barrier does not raise on entry, take a ticket and after parking you will need to show proof of purchase and your ticket number to enable assistance on exit.
  • St Julian’s Friar’s Car Park – closed until further notice. St Julian’s Friar’s resident permit holders can use Abbey Foregate Car Park and are asked to park ideally on the top tier.

Theatre Severn audiences are advised the nearest alternative parking is at Raven Meadows Multi-Storey Car Park. Matinee performance audiences are advised to use the Shrewsbury Park & Ride service.

Waste collections

If we’re unable to collect your waste / recycling due to flooding, please leave your refuse bin out. If we can’t get to you on your scheduled collection day we’ll come back and collect it as soon as it’s safe to do so.

Take your garden waste bin back in, and put it out on your next scheduled garden waste collection day.

Leave your recycling bin / boxes and blue sacks out (as long as they don’t present a trip hazard or may be washed away). We’ll collect them as soon as it’s safe to do so.
