Black History Month 2021 at Shropshire Museums
This year Shropshire Museums are supporting Black History Month (October 2021) by staging a series of events across its sites and online to reflect upon and engage with black history as represented through Shropshire Museums’ collections.
Events
At Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery (SM&AG), several objects on permanent display will be reinterpreted and seen through the lens to reveal stories about local connections to black history and the transatlantic slave trade.
From 1 October to 29 October, SM&AG’s Mini Mammoths preschool activity sessions will be exploring black children’s literature every Friday.
Shropshire Museums Collections Centre in Ludlow will be sharing a variety of different African objects from the museum collections every week on the centre’s Facebook page.
Museum collections are filled with objects that reflect a whole range of communities and different experiences of the black diaspora. African and Black Diaspora is the voluntary and involuntary movement of Africans and their descendants to various parts of the world during the modern and pre-modern periods.
