A new event “My Town, Our Future” is to be held in Market Drayton next week (Thursday 11 August 2011), offering traders a chance to access essential training and support.

My Town, Our Future has been inspired by queen of shops Mary Portas, a retail guru who shares tricks of the trade to help keep small shopkeepers in business.

The event will start at 5.30pm at the Festival Drayton Centre; it is free, and open to all local traders.

Following the themes of Mary’s BBC2 series “Mary Queen of Shops”, it will be led by specially-trained retail trainers who will provide people with an opportunity to develop ideas for their own retail businesses.

Alongside this there will be lots of information on apprenticeships, short courses, World Host Customer service training, and the opportunity to talk to other local businesses.

Councillor Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for economic growth and prosperity, said:

“This market town is full of dedicated business people who are passionate about its future. This is an excellent event which will help support them; especially important during these difficult economic times.”

Brian Gillow, Shropshire Councillor for Market Drayton East, said:

“I look forward to attending this event and expect it to come up to the retailers’ expectations.  I hope that we can enjoy a constructive and worthwhile approach towards meeting current needs.”

Roger Hughes, a Shropshire Councillor for Market Drayton West, said:

“This is an exciting event and a chance for retailers to come along to discuss the issues they have and to see what opportunities are out there for business support and training.”
