Cound Arbour Bridge road closure from 11-17 August 2021
Cound Arbour Bridge, which carries the Cound Arbour to Cound road over the Cound Brook near the war memorial, will be closed to traffic from Wednesday 11 August to Tuesday 17 August 2021 inclusive.
The bridge parapet was damaged in late March 2021 after a vehicle strike. The damaged sections of the downstream parapet were removed, and temporary scaffolding/barriers erected to provide edge protection for road users.
The repair works will involve replacing any damaged cast iron components with new like-for-like components, along with minor concrete repairs to the upstands to which the main posts are fixed. The parapet will also be painted.
Unfortunately, in order to carry out the proposed work safety it will be necessary to close the bridge to vehicular traffic. The normal working hours will be between 8am to 4pm weekdays.
When the bridge is closed, traffic will be diverted to the A458 via local roads by a signed diversion route.
Access over the bridge for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will remain available throughout the proposed work.
The work will be undertaken by the council’s term maintenance contractor Kier, with supervision by the council’s term consultant WSP.
Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for physical infrastructure, highways and built housing, said:-
“It is appreciated that the bridge closure will cause some inconvenience, and everyone involved will do all that they reasonably can to reopen it as soon as possible. I thank residents, businesses and road users for their understanding while this important work is carried out.”
Claire Wild, local Shropshire Councillor for Severn Valley, said:-
“Hopefully the long-awaited improvements to the bridge will stop these incidents. A proposed scheme is in the capital budget for next year.”
