A new play area suitable for children of all ages is now open at Monkmoor Recreation Centre in Shrewsbury.

The new play area boasts equipment such as a twin fly, pod swing, aerial runway, altima climbing poles and aeroskate, and has extended the age range of this area from specific under 8s and toddler equipment up to all age ranges.

The play area was funded through Shropshire Council’s Playbuilder programme and was installed by Proludic Ltd at a cost of £50,000.

It is being officially opened on Friday 20 May 2011 at 4.30pm and all are welcome to attend.

Dorothy Jones, Play Development Officer for Shropshire Council said:

“This play area is right in the centre of a community that is full of young people wanting something to do.  We could see straight away that this area was crying out for better facilities.  It is great to see we have provided a great facility that not only gives young people the confidence to play imaginatively, but also encourages all ages to play together, improving the social and physical capabilities of these children.”

Miles Kenny, Shropshire Councillor for Underdale said:

“The young people of Monkmoor have been requesting some exciting play equipment for many years on the recreation centre.  It’s great to see that the community of Monkmoor now have a brilliant and challenging place to play, walk and relax.”

Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for active and healthy lifestyles, said:

“This area will make such a difference to this community.  The recreation centre is always full of children and young people playing sport or playing in the play area, which is just brilliant to see.  This area really benefits from having such a dedicated team of staff to drive the improvement of the centre along, and is a testament to what we have achieved throughout the county with the Playbuilder programme.

“The area that has been created is a testament to the type of teenage children’s play areas that Shropshire Council is striving to encourage.  The area complements the natural environment but is challenging at the same time.  The children and young people that have used the area have loved it, and it is fantastic to be able to support local communities in projects such as this.”

The play area project is part of a larger programme to improve the site for all of its current and potential users.  Work will start shortly on a new skateboard park to replace the current skatepark which is worn out.

The recreation centre is managed Shropshire Council’s leisure services team who will continue to improve facilities throughout the future.
