Runners step up to the mark in Shrewsbury runs
On Sunday 18 September 2016 Shropshire Council’s leisure services team organised the Severn Bridges 10k Road Race and a 1k Fun Run. The race started and finished in The Quarry in Shrewsbury.
This year’s race attracted a record turnout of runners, and all 450 places were taken up. Runners came from across the country, and this annual event is now a firm fixture in the road race calendar for many local athletes. This year was the 18th, and most successful in the event’s history.
The first male runner to cross the line was James Hickinbottom from Shrewsbury Athletics Club, who won in a time of 35min 8sec. The first female to cross the line was Kim Fawke from Lawley Running Club, who won in a time of 39min 15sec. A complete list of results and photos from the 10k Race and the Fun Run can be found on Shropshire Council’s website (shropshire.gov.uk/leisure) on the Severn Bridges Road Race webpage.
51 people also took part in the one mile Fun Run which takes place around The Quarry. The Fun Run was won by Chester Romei, and the first female was Lillie Dean.
Special thanks to all the staff that helped with the event, including the course marshals who were provided by Shropshire Shufflers who, without their continued support, we would not be able to host this event.
Stuart West, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for leisure and culture, said:
“The event was a great success, and we were pleased that the event attracted a record number of entries. It was wonderful to see so many people in The Quarry coming to support the event and cheering on the runners. The provisional date for next year’s event is Sunday 17 September 2017.”
