Free Wednesday night parking in Shrewsbury in run-up to Christmas

Related topics: Partner organisations

Shropshire Council is offering shoppers in Shrewsbury free parking on Wednesday nights in the run-up to Christmas, starting on 18 November – the night of the town’s Christmas Cracker and Lights Switch On event.

On that day, and every Wednesday evening until Christmas, people can park for free in the following Shropshire Council-owned long-stay car parks from 4pm.

  • Frankwell Main car park.
  • St. Julian’s Friars car park.
  • Abbey Foregate car park.

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for highways and transport, said:

“I am really pleased to once again offer free parking on Wednesday evenings in the run up to Christmas to encourage people to visit the town for late night shopping, to enjoy the Christmas celebrations and to support the town centre traders.”

Kirsten Henly, Shrewsbury BID Manager, said:

“The Christmas Cracker event marks the start of the festive season and it’s great that shoppers and visitors won’t have to worry about parking charges after 4pm. With bands, choirs and acoustic acts as well as a Lantern Parade and the next Eat Street Shrewsbury at St Alkmund’s Church, there’s plenty to see and do on 18 November. On late night shopping Wednesdays in the run up to Christmas there’s even more activity planned to entertain visitors and those staying in town after work, from Light Projection Nights to Carols in the Square. We hope this offer will mean people stay in town for longer to soak up the seasonal atmosphere.”
