A day in the life of… ‘An RAF air traffic control school’

As Armed Forces Day fast approaches, the Shropshire Armed Forces Community Covenant (AFCC) are to spend a day at RAF Shawbury.

Tomorrow (Thursday 18 June 2015) Shropshire AFCC will be learning what a typical day is like for an RAF service person whilst based in the UK, by shadowing a Flt Lt in the Central Air Traffic Control School and actually taking part in an RAF personal training session.

The visit to RAF Shawbury will see Shropshire AFCC tweet for five to six hours about the work staff undertake, as well as providing a range of facts about the forces. Tweets will begin at approximately 8.30am with the hashtag #Dayinthelifeof.

The ‘tweetathon’ offers people an opportunity to build a greater understanding of the forces and quiz the Flt Lt, who will be able to respond directly.

This arrangement is part of a campaign supporting National Armed Forces Day and seeks to raise awareness of what our servicemen and women do for our country and their contribution to local communities.

Tim Barker, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for the Shropshire Armed Forces Community Covenant, said:

“What a great opportunity this is to really get inside the day-to-day life of today’s RAF. Please will everyone who can take part, and follow our team of civilians and service personnel through their busy lives.”

Armed Forces Day offers people the opportunity to thank and celebrate the Armed Forces as well gain a greater understanding of what the services do for us nationally, and for our local communities.
