Fines issued for flytipping
People are being reminded to dispose of their rubbish responsibly – or risk being fined.
The warning from Shropshire Council comes as two Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) have been issued for flytipping in Ditherington, Shrewsbury. The notices were given after a bed was thrown over a fence at the back of a property, and another person dumped bags of rubbish at the same spot.
Flytipping is the illegal dumping of any waste or rubbish anywhere other than at a licensed tip.
After receiving reports from local residents at the end of March 2011, council environmental maintenance officers knocked on the doors of two homes and the individuals admitted the offences.
Councillor Martin Taylor-Smith, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for street cleaning, said:
“Everyone has a responsibility for the environment. Cleaning up flytipping costs us all; it is dangerous and potentially harmful to health and wildlife, can cause serious pollution, and attracts further flytipping and arson.
“These recent cases demonstrate that we take this matter very seriously, and will fine people caught flytipping. While our officers carry out regular patrols in Shrewsbury, we also urge people to report flytipping, littering and dog-fouling to Shropshire Council. All reports are investigated so that we can take the appropriate action.”
Councillor Alan Mosley, Shropshire Councillor for Castlefields and Ditherington, added:
“Like most areas of the town, we suffer from incidents of flytipping from time to time. There can be no excuse for this, particularly as there are good facilities to dispose of excess refuse and bulky items. Flytipping is serious anti-social behaviour and I am delighted to support council officers in acting firmly when cases arise. I would also strongly urge residents to report any incidents they become aware of.”
