National recognition for Shropshire’s bulky waste collection service

Shropshire Council’s bulky waste collection service has been singled out nationally as a great example of how to reduce the amount of waste that is sent to landfill.

The service is run by Shropshire Council, in partnership with Veolia and local charities South Shropshire Furniture Scheme, Shropshire Housing Alliance and Reviive.

The government-backed Waste & Resource Action Programme (WRAP) has found that partnerships are fundamental to increasing the amount of waste that is reused in England, rather than sent to landfill.

And, to help demonstrate this, WRAP has produced a video case study to highlight how waste is being kept out of landfill in Shropshire thanks to these organisations working closely together in the county.

The Shropshire video is one of seven such case studies produced by WRAP, which each aims to encourage more organisations to take the partnership approach to increase the re-use of waste.

Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for waste management, said:

“I’m delighted that our bulky waste collection service has been recognised nationally as an example of best practice.

“Sub-contracting our bulky waste collections to local furniture re-use charities is not only saving taxpayers’ money by reducing waste, it also crucial for supporting the local economy.

“Third-sector re-use organisations generate millions of pounds and thousands of jobs through re-use & recycling. WRAP estimates that UK households also benefit by some £6 billion a year through re-use, including giving people access to more affordable products.”
