Family fun at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery this Bank Holiday weekend

There’s so much to enjoy at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery this coming Bank Holiday weekend and beyond.

A new exhibition in the Community Exhibition space called “Made in Shrewsbury” features some of the county town’s most famous manufacturers such as Sentinel, Hartley’s, Silhouette, and Wales & Edwards.  To launch the show a Sentinel steam lorry will be on display in The Square on Saturday between 11.30am and 1.30pm.

Children will love our facepainter who will be painting bug and animal themed faces on Bank Holiday Monday 26 May 2014 and Friday 30 May 2014 (11am-4pm).  Take part in our free children’s trail and find time-travelling LEGO® Minifigures hiding in the galleries.

Our six galleries display Shrewsbury and Shropshire’s history from Roman times through the Middle Ages, the Civil War and up to the present day with contemporary art from the Frank Cohen Collection.

On Sunday 25 May Shrewsbury is staging its Cycle Grand Prix and there will be a host of attractions from facepainting to creating bicycle-powered artwork in The Square to enjoy before the race starts at 4pm.

Tina Woodward, Shropshire Council’s deputy Cabinet member for visitor economy, said:

“The response to the new museum has been overwhelming and this is a great time for families and friends to have a look round.  Especially as all the other activities going on around Shrewsbury will create a great atmosphere in the town and give you plenty to enjoy.”

On Sunday evening BBC’s Countryfile programme will be coming from Shropshire and among the items it looks at will be Charles Darwin’s Thinking Path, which is the subject of a wonderful art installation by Shirley Chubb in the museum relating to Darwin’s life and times.
