Acton Scott Farm gets ready to open doors for 2014
Spring is in the air at Acton Scott Farm, run by Shropshire Council, ahead of its seasonal re-opening on Saturday 12 April 2014. All the animals have returned from their winter lodgings and the farm’s sow has given birth to 11 beautiful piglets for visitors to see.
The magnificent Shire horses will be out ploughing the land and Dusty the donkey is looking forward to seeing his fan club.
The Shropshire sheep are just about to have their lambs and we have a new breed of hen that produces the most beautiful baby blue eggs.
There are four cute Shropshire shorthorn calves and our chicks are being hatched for our very young visitors to cuddle.
There is an exceptional display of vintage wheel-wrighting and historic vehicles and ploughs for visitors to appreciate a bygone age of farming. There will be working bread ovens, spinning and making corn dollies. The children’s willow maize has been refurbished and the gypsy caravan in the picket fenced play area is just waiting to welcome guests.
There is a new caterer at the onsite café with some delicious traditional dishes and the great British pudding has returned. If you fancy a walk about the farm and then lunch, you will be in the right place. For those with lighter tastes there are generous ploughman’s lunches and old favourites such as cream teas and tasty beverages of dandelion and burdock as well as Victorian lemonade.
Tina Woodward, Shropshire Council’s deputy Cabinet member for visitor economy, is keen that visitors should go and see the demonstrations of the many traditional skills on show, saying:
“Easter and spring at Acton Scott really is a special time and I’m sure visitors will enjoy chatting with our knowledgeable and passionate staff, who will be delighted to share their experience and assist to make your visit truly memorable.”
