Safer routes to school proposal for Crowmere Road in Shrewsbury

A four-week consultation into proposed safety improvements along Crowmere Road in Shrewsbury, near Crowmoor Primary School and Belvidere Secondary School, is starting this month (September 2013).

There have been long-standing requests to consider potential improvements in the area to encourage drivers to slow down and make it safer for pupils who are travelling to and from school.

A raft of proposals are now being put forward, including a 20mph speed limit, raised plateaus with associated crossing opportunities, speed cushions and on-street parking restrictions.

The consultation drawings and supporting information will be on display at both schools from Monday 30 September 2013 until Friday 25 October 2013 – although Crowmoor Primary will be closed on Friday 25 October due to a PD day.

Feedback forms will be available for people to give their views on the various elements that make up the scheme, which will be used to decide the way forward with the proposals.

There will also be an extensive local letter drop giving the community the opportunity to comment on this important scheme.

Councillor Pam Moseley, local Shropshire Councillor for Monkmoor, said:

“I am delighted that safety measures are to be introduced to Crowmere Road, a busy and important route, especially for pupils going to and from Crowmoor Primary and Belvidere Secondary schools.  The measures proposed should make the road safer for everyone, especially pedestrians, and I would encourage residents to view the plans and have their say on the proposals.”

 Claire Wild, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for highways and transport, added:

“There have been concerns about the safety of the road near these particular schools for some time, so it is good to see this scheme coming to fruition.”
