New skate facility for Shrewsbury

Shropshire Council will host the opening of a new skate ramp at Shrewsbury Sports Village on Saturday 1 June 2013.  The ramp will be officially opened by Kevin Pardy, local Shropshire Councillor for Sundorne, at 11am as part of the opening ceremony. 

The opening will be followed by an hour’s coaching session and an afternoon ‘skate jam’ and competition for anyone that would like to take part.  Prizes will be awarded for the best tricks in under 16s and over 16s categories. Entry into the competition is free.  The mini ramp was constructed by ‘Concreate’ in just 5 weeks, and cost £25,000 to build. 

The decision to build the ramp followed a consultation in 2012 which sought young people’s and skaters’ views about their preferred location for a skate facility, and what they wanted it to look like. 

Gwilym Butler, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for leisure, said: 

“It’s always great to see facilities like these being built in Shropshire; this facility will be well used, as I’m aware officers have done a lot of work with the users to get a facility that they want.”   

Kevin Pardy said: 

“This is a great facility for local people, and I am sure it will get a lot of use.  Local skaters have been asking for a facility like this for some time; it also complements the current street plaza.”
