Shropshire Schools get together at eco event
Over 80 children from 17 schools across Shropshire will be descending on Acton Scott Historic Working Farm for the Eco-Schools Activity Day next week.
The event, on Tuesday 26 March 2013, will include a host of workshops for the children to get themselves involved in. The event will run from 10.30am until 2.30pm, and include activities such as inner tube art, energy saving, a bug hunt and slimming your bin.
Several local organisations have confirmed that they will be involved on the day with the running of these workshops, which will be structured around key topics that the Eco-Schools concentrate on – water, transport, energy, biodiversity, healthy living, litter, waste, global citizenship, and school grounds. Water Aid, Sustrans, Severn Trent Water, Fordhall Farm and Bridges are among those who have confirmed that they will be involved in the day’s events.
Eco-Schools is an international award programme that encourages pupils and teachers to come up with fun, eco-friendly projects to help make their school a more pleasant place to be and reduce its impact on the environment.
Eco-Schools is well supported in Shropshire with over 90% of our schools signed up, over 20 of which have the coveted Green Flag award. Eco-Schools is a great programme for both pupils and staff, and for making local schools more sustainable. It can help schools to make both resources and financial savings and efficiencies through a number of different activities, from reducing energy and waste costs to improving school grounds and adding fresh produce to school meals. It can also help schools to engage with their local community and develop partnerships and projects with local businesses.
Rachel Strivens, Shropshire Council’s sustainability manager, said:
“This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the great work that we are doing, and can do, with schools, in particular Eco-Schools.”
The event will also provide an opportunity for schools to explore some of the support available in Shropshire, and understand how different activities link to the curriculum and what is popular with pupils.
