Sport Makers: become a part of the Olympic legacy

Related topics: Leisure, culture and heritage

Are you aged over 16 and interested in sport? Have you thought about volunteering?  If yes, then Sport Makers is for you.

Sport Makers is a new scheme aiming to recruit, train and deploy new sports volunteers across Shropshire.  It is an exciting new element of Sport England’s Places People Play programme, which will use the inspirational pull of London 2012 to attract more volunteers into sport at a local level.   You don’t need to be sporty.

Across the UK, 40,000 people over the age of 16 will be recruited into sports volunteering.  Here in Shropshire, we are looking for people with a wide variety of skills that are badly needed by sports clubs and other organisation delivering sport in the community.

These will be people who can, for example, keep websites up to date, or who understand accounts, have practical skills; but mainly, people who just want to see their community thrive, and have the time to help make that happen.

New volunteers will have a positive and inspiring introduction to the world of sports volunteering via a series of workshops delivered in conjunction with Energize, the county sports partnership.  We will then match you to a sports club looking for volunteers with your particular skills, where you can make a real difference to that club’s development and future.

Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for active and healthy lifestyles, said:

“Sport Makers offers people an excellent opportunity to get involved in their local community.  London 2012 was an inspiration to many, and I hope this will continue to highlight the importance of sports clubs across the county.”

Up and coming Sport Maker workshops are:

  • 11 February – The Lantern, Shrewsbury 2pm – 4pm
  • 7 March – Shirehall, Shrewsbury 6.30pm – 8.30pm.

To book onto either of the above, please visit the Sport Makers website: www.sportmakers.co.uk.
