Rapping robot to visit Shropshire schools

Related topics: Community

Schoolpupils across Shropshire will be learning more about recycling this month when ‘Recycler’ the rapping robot visits 12 Shropshire primary schools.   (See notes for schedule).

Recycler has been visiting schools in Shropshire since 2004, and from Monday 11 February 2013 to Thursday 14 February 2103, Recycler will once again be bringing recycling to life at local primary schools through his interactive show.

He is being brought to the county by Shropshire Council in partnership with the national recycling charity Waste Watch.

The talking robot delivers an action-packed, multimedia assembly.  Recycler sings, moves, lights up and interacts with pupils to teach them how to reduce, reuse and recycle.

The show tells pupils and teachers all about the three Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle – and the robot really does do a rap as part of the performance.

Throughout the performance, Recycler shows children how they can reduce their waste and put the three Rs into practice at home and at school, for example by making full use of local recycling schemes.  This is all helping to reduce the environmental and financial burden of sending waste to landfill.

Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for waste management, said:

“We’ve found that children are good at encouraging their family to recycle, and a visit from Recycler the Robot is a fun way to ensure children understand about the importance of reducing the amount of waste we produce, reusing items, and recycling.”

Shirley Barre, Education Officer with Waste Watch, said:

“Every household in the UK throws away over one tonne of waste each year, and more than half of this could be recycled.  A visit from Recycler is a great way for young people to learn about how important it is to reduce waste and to recycle as much as possible, at home and at school.  Joining in with Recycler’s rap and watching the games, props and roleplays is a great way to remember important messages and take them home.”

Recycler has already reached more than two million children across the UK in the 16 years that he has been visiting schools, has been widely praised for his fun and memorable performances to schoolpupils, and has even won a ‘green’ Blue Peter badge for his efforts.

Waste Watch, a part of Keep Britain Tidy, is a leading environmental organisation working to change the way people use the world’s natural resources.  Our vision is a less wasteful society, and we believe everyone has a part to play in reducing waste and living more sustainably.

We are a national, independent, not-for-profit organisation and a registered charity.  We advise, educate and inform people on ways to reduce all forms of waste – from the rubbish we throw away and the energy we needlessly use to the water we pour down the drain.

By making changes to our daily lives and by changing the world around us – at home, in school, and in the workplace – we can all make a big difference.   And Waste Watch exists to show everyone how they can make that difference.
