The management of a Shropshire Council-run residential home has been officially handed over to the county’s largest independent care provider, saving the taxpayer around £1.75 million.

The five year contract sees the transfer of the operation of Crowmoor House in Shrewsbury to Coverage Care Services Limited, which was selected as the preferred provider following a competitive bidding process.

Not-for-profit Coverage Care, based at Oxon Business Park, now operates 15 homes across Shropshire and is due to open its newest home in Oswestry, New Fairholme, in April 2013.

Chief executive of Coverage Care, David Coull, visited the home in Monkmoor yesterday (Monday 14 January 2013) to officially mark the handover and congratulate the staff and residents.

He said:

“Residents and families have been well informed and supported over the past year as the bidding process has taken place, and all residents will remain at the home with exactly the same conditions.

“There may be a new sign outside the home but existing residents, both the older people and adults with learning disabilities, will experience continuity of care.  I’m delighted to be working with the staff and carers at Crowmoor House, and have met with them several times since we were awarded the contract to ensure a smooth transition for both staff and residents.”

By awarding the contract, £1.75 million of savings will be achieved by Shropshire Council over a five-year period, as well as the potential to realise a capital asset of around £1.8 million which can be reinvested into other capital projects.

Ann Hartley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for health and well-being, said:

“Coverage Care has a proven track record in Shropshire and this transfer means that residents will continue to benefit from excellent services.

“We have supported residents and their families throughout this transition.  They have been kept up-to-date at every step, including the milestones of the extremely thorough bid assessment; Coverage Care being chosen from the very high quality bids and working towards the handover.

“The appointment of Coverage Care will offer better value for money for local people, while ensuring continuity of care for current residents, as well as the potential of major development in new local facilities in the future.

“It has been a pleasure to work with Coverage Care and hand over to a company which has clearly demonstrated how it shares our strong commitment to ensuring residents are given the best support possible.”
