Volunteer drivers wanted

Shropshire Council’s Voluntary Car Service (VCS) is looking for more, willing drivers to help make a real difference to the lives of children and vulnerable people in the county.

The VCS provides transport for children and adults with special needs, including individuals with learning difficulties, physical difficulties or behavioural problems. 

Most journeys are regular arrangements, transporting the same passengers at the same time each week.   Volunteers can use their own cars and are paid a monthly mileage allowance for this.

The majority of journeys are during the day between Monday and Friday, but occasionally there may be a weekend journey.  If volunteers are ill or away on holiday, their journeys are covered until their return.

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for transport, said:

“Voluntary drivers play a vital role transporting a host of people who very much value their help.  The VCS are looking to boost their team of dedicated drivers across the whole of Shropshire, so interest from all areas of the county would be very welcomed.  This is a very valuable and rewarding role, and I encourage anyone with time to spare and who wants to make a positive difference in their community to join us.”

Drivers must be over 18 and have their own roadworthy car that has fully comprehensive insurance, and undergo an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check paid for by the council.
