New Shrewsbury health walks launched for national walking month
The Shrewsbury Walking for Health scheme is launching two new walks as part of National Walking Month in May 2012.
The new walks will start from Louise House on Roman Road, Meole Brace at 10:30am every Tuesday starting from tomorrow (1 May), and from the Abbotts Wood day centre, Telford Estate, Monkmoor, every Thursday at 1.30pm starting from Thursday 3 May.
The Walking for Health scheme supported by Shropshire Council is an accredited scheme under the National Walking for Health initiative, whose aim is to encourage more people to become physically active in their local communities.
Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for active and healthy lifestyles, said:
“Walking is such a great way to enjoy regular exercise, to meet new people and have fun at the same time. Incorporating walking into our daily routine can bring great health benefits for people of all ages.”
Tony Durnell, local Shropshire Councillor for Monkmoor, and Mayor of Shrewsbury, said:
“I am really pleased to see Monkmoor chosen as one of the new areas for health walks this May. Walking not only helps you with your physical health but also helps the physiological side of a person. I know that when I step down from being Mayor of Shrewsbury I will be joining in on these walks.”
