Shropshire Council announces continuation of Community Short Breaks contract with Action for Children
Shropshire Council is pleased to announce that the contract for the provision of Community Short Breaks for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) will remain with current provider Action for Children for a further three years.
This term time short breaks service will offer regular, planned activities, groups, and events for children and young people with SEND who require short breaks as part of their assessed need. These breaks will give children opportunities to spend time with friends, enjoy leisure and social activities they may not otherwise access, and develop independence. Community Short Breaks provide families and parent carers with a valuable break from their caring responsibilities.
Councillor Ruth Houghton, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for Social Care, said:
‘Action for Children have consistently gone above and beyond to support children and young people with SEND, and their families, providing safe, nurturing spaces for children to learn, grow and flourish. We are proud to continue our partnership and look forward to seeing even more children and young people benefit from their innovative services and caring staff.
‘I would also like to extend my gratitude to Shropshire Parent Carer Council (PACC), whose invaluable involvement throughout the commissioning process ensured the voices and experiences of families were at the centre of our decision making. The dedication and advocacy of PACC have played a pivotal role in shaping services that truly make a difference in our community.’
Claire Cahill, Operational Director of Children’s Services at Action for Children, added:
‘We’re thrilled to have secured the contract for our Shropshire Community Short Breaks service for children and young people with disabilities for another three years. We are committed to working alongside Shropshire County Council to ensure we continue to support families with a flexible approach. This gives us the incredible opportunity to continue our vital work helping children and young people in the region to thrive, develop and enjoy life.
‘Since 2007 we have delivered positive, practical and caring support tailored to the children and families involved. Our clubs give children and young people access to fun and engaging activities, while offering families valuable one-to-one support and peace of mind while taking a much-needed break.
‘We are delighted to be able to continue helping children in Shropshire to reach their full potential – this is wonderful news for the families that we will continue to support.’
The Community Short Breaks service forms an integral part of a broader offer for children and young people with SEND, providing enjoyable activities that support their development and well-being, and which deliver the flexibility and choice families expect.
Shropshire Council remains firmly committed to working closely with families, service providers, and local organisations to ensure that children and young people with SEND can access the support and opportunities that they deserve.
Action for Children are currently developing an exciting programme of term-time activities, groups and events that will build on the existing service and will continue to be provided from various locations throughout Shropshire.
