Human Rights Day: Speak up for safety, equality and respect
Today is Human Rights Day, which marks the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
It’s a global reminder that everyone is entitled to fundamental rights and freedoms—such as safety, equality and dignity—regardless of who they are or where they live.
Here in Shropshire, it’s a call to action for all of us—colleagues, neighbours, friends and leaders—to play our part. To learn more about human rights day click here.
Today also marks the close of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender‑Based Violence, which begin annually on White Ribbon Day (25 November). These campaigns shine a light on the urgent need to prevent violence and promote equality.
Violence and abuse violate fundamental human rights and harm individuals, families and communities. Ending it requires more than words; it demands that we speak up, challenge behaviours that put people at risk, and model respect in every setting.
For Shropshire Council, as a White Ribbon Accredited organisation, this is a powerful moment to reaffirm our commitment to creating a county where everyone is safe, equal and respected.
Cllr Alex Wagner, deputy leader of Shropshire Council and portfolio holder for communities, said:
“On Human Rights Day, we reaffirm a simple truth: everyone deserves safety, equality and dignity. Let’s keep the energy of the 16 Days of Activism alive by speaking up for respect—every day.”
