As the festive season approaches, NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin is ramping up efforts to keep residents healthy amid rising concerns over flu, Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), COVID-19, and norovirus all circulating in our communities at the same time.

Latest data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reveals flu cases are currently highest among 5 to 14-year-olds, but a significant rise in adult cases is anticipated over the holidays when schools and nurseries close. With winter viruses expected to peak in the coming weeks, the NHS is urging everyone to take simple yet effective steps to safeguard their health and make the most of the holiday season.

Vanessa Whatley, Chief Nursing Officer at NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, said:

“As we enter the festive season, it’s important to prepare for winter health challenges so we can all enjoy a safe and healthy holiday.

“With respiratory illnesses affecting our residents and placing the NHS under severe pressure earlier than usual, taking simple steps like stocking up on over-the-counter medicines, keeping up to date with vaccinations, getting early advice from pharmacists and knowing you can seek help for minor illnesses from them can make a big difference.

“As we gather indoors over the festive period, getting the flu as well as Covid or RSV jabs for those who are eligible, remains the best way to protect ourselves and our loved ones. This also helps to ease the workload on NHS staff who are working tirelessly to care through their local healthcare services or when hospital care is required.

“I urge everyone eligible to schedule their vaccinations as soon as possible to help keep themselves and their families safe this December and beyond. By planning ahead, we can protect our health, ease the pressure on NHS services, and start the New Year on the right foot.”

Here are our top tips to ensure a healthy and stress-free festive period:

 Protect Yourself with Vaccinations

  • People have just over a week left to book COVID-19 and flu vaccination appointments on the NHS online booking system, NHS App and 119 phone service – until the autumn vaccination programme officially ends on December 19. After this, those eligible can contact their GP or pharmacy to arrange an appointment.
  • Flu vaccinations will be available until the end of March 2025, while COVID-19 vaccinations can be booked until 31 January 2025.
  • This year, the NHS has also launched the new RSV vaccination programme for older adults and pregnant women which can help give additional protection against the RSV that typically circulates in winter months. 

Be Aware of Norovirus

Norovirus, often called the “winter vomiting bug,” is highly contagious and common during the colder months. To help prevent the spread:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water, especially after using the toilet or before eating.
  • Avoid preparing food for others if you have symptoms.
  • Stay hydrated if unwell and rest at home until at least 48 hours after symptoms stop.
  • Contact NHS 111 for advice if symptoms persist or worsen.

Prepare for Minor Ailments

  • Stock Your Medicine Cabinet: Include essentials like paracetamol, plasters, simple dressings, and age-appropriate remedies such as Calpol for children.
  • Check Expiry Dates: Replace out-of-date medicines so you’re ready to manage minor health issues at home.

Order Repeat Prescriptions in Advance

  • Avoid last-minute stress by ordering repeat prescriptions early. Use the NHS app for convenience and to help keep NHS 111 available for urgent needs.

Look After Your Mental Health

This time of year, can be emotionally challenging for some, and it’s important to take steps to protect your mental wellbeing. The Five Ways to Wellbeing  include staying connected to others and taking time for self-care – can be especially beneficial. For additional support, NHS services are available to help you stay mentally well this winter.

 Know Where to Get Help

  • For common seasonal issues like earaches, sore throats, and coughs think self-care. Paracetamol, fluids, and rest are often enough to manage at home.
  • For minor illnesses visit your local pharmacy for advice.
  • For minor injuries visit you nearest Minor Injury Unit. There are 4 Minor Injury Units in the county located in Bridgnorth, Ludlow, Oswestry and Whitchurch.
  • Unsure what to do contact NHS 111 online or call 111 for guidance.
  • Use the Healthier Together for guidance on common childhood illnesses.
  • For emergencies, including chest pain, serious injury, or signs of stroke, always go straight to your nearest Emergency Department (A&E).
