Shrewsbury station gyratory work to begin again on 6 January

Related topics: Economic growth / Highways, transport and environmental maintenance

Work to enhance and improve the Shrewsbury railway station gyratory area will begin again on 6 January 2025 following a pause for Christmas.

The area includes the gyratory next to Shrewsbury railway station, connecting Castle Gates (A5191), Chester Street (A528), Smithfield Road (A458) and Cross Street (A528), along with areas to the north and south.

Work will recommence on 6 January and include the continuation of paving works and the introduction of new signs, posts, permanent traffic signals and street lighting.

This will involve setting up temporary traffic signals to enable work to be safely carried out outside the former Antonio’s barbers.

There will also be paving and kerbing work on the new pedestrian crossings at Castle Foregate, Smithfield Road and the railway station exit. A temporary pedestrian walkway in the road will also be provided.

Temporary traffic lights will be located on Smithfield Road/Raven Meadows junction, Castle Foregate, and the exit from the Railway Station – and the permanent signals will be taken out of action. Work will be carried out as quickly as possible so that the traffic lights at the bus station junction can return to permanent use at the earliest opportunity.

This will then leave temporary signals in place by the Railway Station to undertake the pedestrian crossing work.

The temporary signals will be attended, as will the permanent signals when they are switched back on. This is to minimise congestion and queue lengths as much as possible.

This phase of the work is due to be completed towards the end of January 2025 and further updates will be published for ongoing phases through to full completion of the project.

If you have any queries regarding the works, please contact the Contractor’s Works Manager, located in the site compound in Raven Meadows or email LUF2@shropshire.gov.uk

The ‘station quarter’ work – being carried out by local company McPhillips Ltd on behalf of Shropshire Council – is Government funded and is set to be completed by summer 2025.
