Residents in the Shropshire Council area are being reminded that they need to subscribe to the council’s garden waste collection service if they want their real Christmas tree to be collected at the end of the festive season.

The new opt-in garden waste service began on 4 November and householders must pay £56 per bin, per year if they want their garden waste bin to be collected.

So far more than 63,000 households have subscribed to the service.

Ian Nellins, Shropshire Council’s deputy leader and Cabinet member with responsibility for waste management, said:

“This Christmas our waste collection crews will once again be collecting real Christmas trees and taking them away to be recycled. However, this year people must have subscribed to the garden waste service if they want their tree to be taken away. So, if you’re planning to buy a real tree, please remember to sign up to the service.

“I’m really pleased with the number of people that have subscribed so far and I want to thank everyone that has signed up. Each subscription is generating income for the council that will ensure we can continue to provide essential services for those who need them.”

To subscribe and for more information about the garden waste collection service people should visit the Shropshire Council website at www.shropshire.gov.uk/gardenwaste.

To subscribe by phone people should call 0345 520 7007 and select option 2.

People can also subscribe by visiting the council’s Shropshire Local units in Ludlow and Shrewsbury.
