Shropshire Council and Telford & Wrekin Council join forces for local nature recovery strategy
Shropshire Council has been selected by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to lead a new local nature recovery strategy, working with Telford & Wrekin Council.
A local nature recovery strategy is required by law under the Environment Act and is designed to drive actions to help nature. Each strategy must set out priorities for protecting and enhancing valuable areas that already exist, as well as creating new habitats where wildlife can thrive.
Residents from across Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin will be invited to share their ideas so that everybody can benefit from the recovery of nature.
The strategy for Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin will be developed in partnership with a wide range of local and national organisations, who will all bring helpful knowledge and expertise.
Ian Nellins, Shropshire Council’s deputy Leader, and Cabinet member for climate change, environment and transport, said:-
“We are excited to be at the forefront of work to help the recovery of nature across Shropshire, and will make sure that everyone’s voice is heard.
“Shropshire’s residents are rightly proud of the county’s rich natural heritage, and this is an opportunity to help our landscape to flourish even more.
“A locally-led nature recovery strategy will guide work to protect, sustain and enhance our natural spaces to meet our priorities of a healthy environment and healthy people as part of The Shropshire Plan.”
Carolyn Healy, Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member for climate action, green spaces, heritage and leisure, said:-
“We’ve been working hard for some time on nature recovery and habitat restoration across Telford and Wrekin’s network of green spaces and are now witnessing excellent results.
“I look forward to seeing how Telford and Wrekin’s experience and expertise in this area can contribute to the countywide strategy on this vitally important piece of work.”
