Shropshire Council’s tourism strategies will be open for discussion at a new tourism expo hosted by Visit Shropshire this month.

Tourism officers will address delegates and network with industry professionals, including Visit Britain, at the tourism expo being held at Wrekin College on 28 March.

Rob Gittins, Shropshire Council Cabinet member for culture and digital, said:-

“There is a huge opportunity to tap into the tourism industry in Shropshire so that we can maximise all the economic and cultural opportunities it presents.

“With input from Shropshire Council a new partnership is emerging comprising people and organisations from across the public and private sectors with a stake in future success. Collectively, this partnership has identified priorities and related actions that will begin to transform Shropshire as a visitor destination.

“This work has also resulted in Shropshire Council developing a destination management plan. The plan is a fresh start for Shropshire. It provides impetus and direction for everyone in the county with a stake in the sector and will open up funding streams that we have not previously been able to access.

“I am delighted that Shropshire Council’s involvement in developing this strategy and supporting the tourism sector as a whole is being recognised and that the Council will not only be represented at Visit Shropshire’s Tourism Expo but will have the opportunity to speak to delegates too.

He added visitors are not the only people who will benefit from developing tourism across the county.

“Health and wellbeing is connected to enjoyment of the outdoors, access to green spaces and opportunities for exercise. The destination management plan’s emphasis on protecting and managing landscapes assets and improving accessibility to outdoor spaces will benefit the resident population as much as visitors to the area,”

People are invited to have their say on the plan. It can be read in full and responses are welcome at Shropshire Destination Management Plan | Shropshire Council until March 31.
