Art trail inspires families at print-making workshops
We’re marking Ukraine Independence Day today (Wednesday 24 August 2022) with some news and stories to support the day, and to show the generosity and support of Shropshire people and organisations in welcoming those who have resettled in the county.
This summer’s Shrewsbury Arts Trail has inspired children and young people from the Ukraine taking part in printing workshops at the Shropshire Council-run Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery.
Children aged from just 3 to 16, and from families being helped by Shropshire Supports Refugees, have taken part in workshops and have explored relief printing to create their own pieces.
Around 15 families attended each of the workshops, and organisers say they were so well attended and enjoyed there will be more events planned over the October 2022 half-term break and at Christmas.
Sasha Morris-Bhatia, Shropshire Council’s museums and archives learning officer, said:-
“Despite the language barrier we managed to communicate really well through art and lots of smiles. A couple of parents said afterwards ‘My child is happy today, so I’m happy’, and some came back for the second workshop too.
“We’re already planning more art workshops for October half-term and the Christmas holiday, as the children are asking when they can come back.”
Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for adult social care and public health, said:-
“The Shrewsbury Art Trail inspired the children and young people to come up with their own designs for printing, and they created some charming works.
“Our staff were keen to support the families who have come to Shropshire, and the workshops were clearly enjoyed by everyone who attended them. I am sure everyone involved will be looking forward to the next ones in October.”
