Growing line up to celebrate the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay in Shrewsbury
An ever-growing programme of free activities and entertainment is set to celebrate the arrival of the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay in Shrewsbury on Monday 18 July.
Schoolchildren, sports clubs, musicians, dancers and performers are set to entertain crowds gathered to witness the Queen’s Baton Relay as it makes its entrance to the Quarry Park, via the River Severn.
The huge celebration, which is expected to draw a crowd of thousands, begins at 4pm and events on the mainstage are planned as local school groups performing songs and dance routines, songs and dance of the commonwealth, the Baton parade and music from local groups and a mass singalong for the finale at 9pm.
Audiences will be encouraged to get involved in the Community Village area where there will be a huge art installation around the bandstand celebrating flags of the Commonwealth with a daytime light installation from Andy Mcgowen. Stands representing Shrewsbury Muslim Centre, the RAF museum, charities, Shropshire Woodland Trust, Shropshire Guides and Scouts, the arts and our new interactive game Beat the Streets, will be represented.
Crafters Scrappies will also be making flags and windsocks with the kids and there will be a hands on STEM workshop too.
The spots village will host clubs offering people the chance to try their hand at something new with everything from racquet sports to rowing and Zumba represented.
Cecilia Motley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, is urging people to get involved. She said:
“There is such a varied programme of free activity planned that there is sure to be something to appeal to everyone.
“I am looking forward to welcoming the Queen’s Baton Relay to Shropshire and I am delighted that we get to showcase so much that makes it such a wonderful place to live and work.”
Shropshire Council has teamed with Energize Shropshire Telford & Wrekin; Shrewsbury BID; Shrewsbury Town Council and Shropshire Festivals to create the free community celebration.
