Consumer experts at Shropshire Council are reminding people to take meter readings for their gas and electric supplies today.

Frances Darling, Shropshire Council’s head of business and consumer protection, said county households should supply meter readings today, ahead of Ofgem’s price cap increase coming into force tomorrow.

Frances said:-

“Supplying accurate meter readings today will prevent suppliers calculating bills on an estimated reading and potentially charging more for energy supplied prior to tomorrow’s price increases.”

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for adult social care and public health, welcomed the advice, saying:-

“Fuel bills are increasing, the price of some fuels has already reached unprecedented highs, and that is a concern for most people.

“Submitting meter readings today will help protect households from paying even more for their supplies by giving their providers accurate numbers on which to calculate the bills.

“I would also encourage people to make the effort to supply meter readings on a monthly basis, as this will also reduce their costs by not being billed on an estimated reading.”

“Shropshire Council is very aware that household budgets are being squeezed and it is a worrying time, but we want to remind people they are not alone.

“We have a webpage which has pulled together links with practical help and advice for people who struggling. It can be found at Cost of living help | Shropshire Council on our website.”
