B4368 Clun to Newcastle: embankment road slip – closure from Monday 7 Feb for 6 weeks

Related topics: Highways, transport and environmental maintenance / Partner organisations

A temporary road closure, during the working day, of a section of the B4368 road between Clun and Newcastle, will start on Monday (7 February 2022).

The works will involve installing a gabion stone retaining wall, drainage improvements, and reconstruction of a slipped section of road, along with resurfacing works along this length.

The work is expected to last six weeks.

Unfortunately,in order to carry out the proposed works safely, it will be necessary to close the road to all vehicular traffic between the hours of 9am and 3pm each day, Monday to Friday.

Emergency vehicles (police, fire, ambulance) will be accommodated, in emergency situations only. In addition, we will be undertaking other essential maintenance works such as pothole repairs, surface patching and gully/ drainage cleansing along the closed section of road, to minimise any future disruption.

Outside of the off-peak working hours specified above, traffic will be controlled using single lane temporary traffic light controls.

Whilst the road is closed, traffic travelling in the Clun direction will be diverted via a signed diversion route at Newcastle along the B4368 up to Anchor and Pentre, along the A489 towards Churchstoke, and right onto the B4385 towards Bishop’s Castle.

Traffic will then follow the B4384 and turn right onto the A488 towards Clun and along the B4368 towards Wittcott Evan.

Traffic travelling to Newcastle from Clun will be diverted vice versa in the opposite direction.

Access for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will remain available throughout the day and access to frontages will be maintained up to the road closure.

We anticipate major disruption and delays during these works, for which we apologise in advance, and ask motorists to find alternative suitable routes during the daytime whilst the road is closed.

The works will be carried out by the council’s term maintenance contractor Kier, with supervision being provided by WSP on behalf of Shropshire Council.
