Flooding update: Sunday 24 January 5pm

River levels are steadily falling across the county. Shropshire Council’s Highways team have commenced clean-up in Shrewsbury, with some initial work taking place in Bridgnorth this morning. Post-flood clean up and repairs will resume as soon as conditions allow.

Bridgnorth

River levels recorded at 4.74m at 11am, expected to slowly recline over the next few days. Residents are urged to continue to take care. Highways teams were on the ground this morning, but progress on the clean-up has been halted due to the weather conditions.

Our highways team and contractors will resume clean-up as soon as the conditions allow.

Shropshire Council staff have been in Bridgnorth carrying out community engagement work and gathering feedback on the flood response.

We’ve had reports of vehicles intentionally driving into flood water, causing additional distress to residents with flooded properties. PLEASE ADHERE TO ROAD CLOSURES AND DO NOT DRIVE INTO FLOOD WATER.

Road Closures

The following closures are still in place:

  • Doctors Lane Bridgnorth
  • Riverside, Bridgnorth
  • Southwell Riverside, Bridgnorth

The A442 between Sutton Maddock and Bandon Island is now open.

Due to the scale of local flooding and high water levels, smaller and minor routes may be affected the advice being to proceed with care and caution.

Car Parks

Riverside Car Park is closed- resident permit holders may use their permits at Innage Lane or Severn Street Car Park whilst road closures are in place for flooding.

Additionally, on-street resident permit holders from Friar Street, Riverside and Southwell Riverside can use their permits at Innage Lane or Severn Street Car Park whilst road closures are in place for flooding.

 

Shrewsbury

The River Severn was last recorded at 3.38m at Welsh Bridge gauge and continues to steadily fall.

Our Highways team were out this morning cleaning out gullies and sections of highway. The clean-up was forced to stop later in the day due to the weather conditions. Gritting has continued to be carried out.

Shrewsbury Bus Station at Raven Meadows will reopen on Monday 25 January.

Closures

The following footpaths ad towpaths are currently closed:

  • Greyfriars Bridge to The Weir
  • The Pig trough to West midland Showground
  • New Street to The Stew/Frankwell Riverside Car Park
  • Coleham Head footpath

The following roads are currently closed:

  • Gravel Hill Lane
  • Sydney Avenue
  • Atcham to Cross Houses and Chiltern Farm Lane
  • Old Coleham
  • Victoria Avenue
  • Cressage to Eaton Constantine

Roushill in Shrewsbury town centre is partially closed because the left-hand lane is blocked by a flood-damaged vehicle. Traffic management is in place.

Car Parks

  • Frankwell Riverside Car Park – closed due to occupation by our partner the Environment Agency.
  • Frankwell Main Car Park – closed until further notice.
  • St Julian’s Friar’s Car Park – closed until further notice. Please do not enter or move signage as important post-flood clean-up is yet to take place due to the weather conditions.

For those needing to park in Shrewsbury for essential journeys, please use Abbey Foregate car park or Raven Meadows Multi-storey car park.
