Shrewsbury’s Gary Numan-inspired record store set for fourth birthday
A Shrewsbury music shop that specialises in Gary Numan records is fast approaching its fourth birthday, and looking forward to increasing sales in the next 12 months.
Tubeway Records, owned by lifelong music fan Aden Horne, opened on the lower level of the Pride Hill Shopping Centre in November 2015, taking advantage of the start-up units that were available in the centre.
As well as Gary Numan records, the shop also sells new and second–hand music on vinyl and CD, including new releases, and also sells music memorabilia.
Aden says:
“I’ve always loved music so it was brilliant to have the opportunity to open my own record shop. I chose Shrewsbury as it’s a good size town that attracts lots of tourists, and because units were available in the Pride Hill Centre for new start-ups.
“I also saw that opening next door to a DVD shop [DVD Megastore] would be advantageous to both us and them as we attract similar types of customer.
“And I thought that the area needed a specialist Gary Numan shop, but while we specialise in Gary Numan, we also sell brand new and second-hand music, which most shops don’t.”
Aden says business has been steady since Tubeway Records opened, and the shop attracts a good variety of customers, from young people through to pensioners. However, he says that people sometimes have trouble finding the shop, so is keen to let potential new customers know where the shop is and what it has to offer.
And what does Aden think is the best thing about running a small shop?
“It can be hard having to work when you’re on holiday, and being available seven days a week. But it’s great being your own boss!”
Tubeway Records is located on the lower level of the Pride Hill Shopping Centre, next to DVD Megastore and close to Wilko.
