Jason from TV’s “The Undateables” helps launch adult social care publication the Local Account
An adult social care publication which showcases real stories from people who use social care, to those who work 24 hours on the frontline to support vulnerable people, has been launched today (Thursday 14 June 2018).

Shropshire Council’s annual Local Account for 2017-18 entitled “Making it Real in Shropshire – our story continues”, is written for residents by those who use the service, as well as council officers and service providers.
The publication has been co-ordinated by Shropshire’s Making it Real (MiR) group, which is made up of people who use adult social care, as well as senior council officers, to ensure social care services meet the needs of those who use them.
Shropshire’s Making it Real team at the UK’s MJ awards – the team were shortlisted for the work they do to help influence and shape adult social care services in the county.
The publication provides information on:
- Real-life stories
- The council’s achievements in adult social care and its performance
- New and existing innovative services
- Feedback on how the council’s adult social care performs, from those who use the service
- Changes, challenges and achievements of the council’s adult social care service
- Future plans for improvement.
Jason, who stars in the TV series “The Undateables”, also appears in the brochure, talking about his experience of receiving support to manage his finances. Jason said about the publication:-
“I’m happy to be part of this. If anyone who has a disability and wants to live on their own, there are places to go for advice and support. The support I had was brilliant and really made a difference.”

The Local Account report is produced by councils across the country every year, and explains what the council’s adult social care service and its partners are doing to help improve the lives of vulnerable people and how well as a service it’s performing.
Lee Chapman, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for adult services, health and social housing, said:-
“Almost all of us will come into contact with adult social care at some point in our lives; yet the value of social care is often unseen. It only becomes relevant when people need it. That’s why it’s so important to raise the profile of adult social care with the public.
“Our publication not only plays a key role in this awareness raising, but also of informing local people of our aspirations for the way we want to provide adult social care services, by enabling people to have more choice and become more independent for longer. We also hope our publication reflects the transparency and accountability of the way adult social care works.”
Jon Hancock, Chair of the Making it Real Board, said:-
“It’s been difficult to summarise the work of a dedicated team working in adult social care in a few pages, especially when that team is made up from a wide range of professionals and a large contingent of unsung volunteers and carers. I hope this issue of the Local Account gives an honest overview of the extraordinary work that goes on, day-in day-out around the county. I’m really pleased with it; well done to all involved.”
MiR member Stewart Smith, Shropshire Council’s development officer – personalisation, added:-
“The MiR team have worked really hard in pulling together this year’s Local Account. The publication looks great is and easy to understand. I would encourage anyone who has an interest in adult social care to have a read and let us know what you think.”
MiR Advisory groups
Made up of people who use or are involved in adult social care services, the MiR Advisory groups offer local people the opportunity to come along to discuss their experiences or concerns about a social care service. It also gives people the opportunity to provide ideas on how to improve them.
