Celebration for long-serving volunteer of Age UK
News from our partners Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin
Local charity Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin helped to celebrate a long-serving volunteer’s 90th birthday last week.
Pam Weston celebrated her 90th birthday and is one of over 150 volunteer befrienders for the local charity. Pam has volunteered for over 12 years visiting older people once a week in their own homes to offer vital companionship. Not only that, she also makes a weekly telephone call to lonely older people to have a chat and share news.
Pam received a Volunteering Service Award certificate along with Nellie Maggs who has volunteered for 12 years and Olive Creffield – a volunteer involved with Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin for 15 years.
Rachel Harris, Friendship Services Co-ordinator of Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, said:
“I have been in my role for 14 years during which time I have found Pam to be nothing short of inspirational and her fellow volunteers are full of admiration. Our volunteers are compassionate and many have shown tremendous commitment over the years, we are very fortunate that they are so caring and want to make a difference to the lives of older people.”

Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin offers a range of services for older people in the county. Last year over 100,000 volunteer hours were given to support older people, ranging from helping people to fill in benefits forms, supporting people in our 40 Day Centres, visiting isolated older people at home, to acting as receptionists in our Shrewsbury office.
As part of our ‘No one should have No one’ campaign, we are raising money and recruiting volunteers to increase services such as befriending and social activities that reduce isolation and loneliness among older people in Shropshire.
