Older People’s Day: Celebrating the work of Ludlow Assembly Rooms

Related topics: Adult social care / Health

To mark Older People’s Day this week (Sunday 1 October 2017), we are continuing to raise the profile of active senior residents in Shropshire’s communities.

Older People’s Day is part of the annual United Nations ‘International Day of Older Persons’ and is dedicated to commemorating the achievements of elderly people in our communities.

This year’s theme is “Stepping into the Future: Tapping the Talents, Contributions and Participation of Older Persons in Society”, and today’s story is from Ludlow Assembly Rooms.

Older people in Ludlow and surrounding areas make great use of the Ludlow Assembly Rooms.

Many are active volunteers who contribute to the day to day running of the centre, and also take up opportunities offered at the centre which include dance classes and table tennis, further learning through University of the Third Age (U3A), regular lectures and talks, and arts classes.

The centre also has a ‘Dementia-Friendly Film’ programme of monthly screenings, where people with dementia and their carers can come and watch a film together. You can find the programme here https://ludlowassemblyrooms.co.uk/search?q=dementia.

Song sessions and rhythm and movement sessions are also offered for those with dementia.

Lee Chapman, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for health, adult social care and housing, said:

“We want to celebrate the contribution older people make in society and within the Shropshire community in particular.

“Many of our older people are already taking part in many activities like those at Ludlow Assembly Rooms. We hope that raising the profile of older people’s talents throughout this week, will encourage participation from those who may not be involved in anything, and inspire them to join others.”
