Event to celebrate completion of travel training for students with special needs

Shropshire Council’s specialist transport team is holding a celebration event in Shrewsbury on Thursday 1 June 2017 for students with special needs who have undertaken travel training and now have the confidence to use public transport independently. 

Travel training is delivered through Enable and is aimed at children of secondary school age, up to the age of 19, who need support with using public transport. The objective is to build up the students’ confidence, knowledge and independence, allowing them to become familiar with their route to school or college.  This covers the use of public transport, but also looks at getting to their local bus stop, payment of fares, travel planning and safety and how to cope in an emergency. 

James Willocks, Shropshire Council’s transport commissioning manager, said:  

“This training increases the students’ confidence, promotes independence and enables them to travel alone. It also heightens their self-esteem, leading to social inclusion and enhanced integration within the community, thus contributing to making Shropshire a better place to live.” 

The event is being held at Shrewsbury Town Football Club’s stadium on Thursday 1 June 2017 at 10.30am.
